Overview

The event.

The Grafton to Inverell Classic is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious one-day cycling races. Covering approximately 229 kilometres from the Clarence Valley to the New England Tablelands, the race includes the famous Gibraltar Range climb, a long, relentless ascent that has decided the outcome for decades and earned the event its reputation as the hardest and most respected road race in the country. Riders leave Grafton in the early morning, grind up through rainforest to the tablelands, then face a further hundred kilometres of exposed rolling terrain into Inverell, often in a shrinking bunch and rising heat.

A genuine old-school Australian classic. Country town start line, a long day in the saddle and a finish steeped in nearly a century of race history.

Who it suitsHighly experienced road racers and ultra-endurance riders with a deep aerobic base and proven 200 km+ race legs.

Key challengesThe Gibraltar Range climb, 229 km of racing distance, exposed tableland crosswinds and late-race heat.

Philippe's Coaching Perspective

What I'd focus on.

On a course like Grafton to Inverell Classic, the winners of the day aren't the strongest cyclists. They're the ones who paced the early climbs at a sustainable effort and had legs to ride the second half.

The most common mistake is training only your strengths. If climbing is your weakness, the answer isn't more flat riding. It's structured climbing repeats, weekly, with progression.

Nutrition and hydration decide the last two hours. If you're not eating and drinking on schedule from the start line, the second half becomes a battle you don't need to fight.
